So you just used your pStyle for the first time and loved it! Now what? How to properly clean your pStyle urination device is a topic that intimidates many people who have never used one. There's this idea that it will be gross or hard to do.

However, once you have used one, you may find it's less of an issue than you thought. We put together this guide to help you make the easiest and best choices for yourself in terms of cleaning.

The Importance of Cleaning Your pStyle

When you use your pStyle stand-to-pee device, the funnel will get some urine on it, and the back edge will come in contact with your genitals, where it may pick up small amounts of genital fluid.

If you are menstruating, have an infection, or are prone to infections, cleaning your pStyle after each use is essential. Even if none of those things are happening, it's still a good idea to clean it regularly.

Here are ways to do it.

First — Shake!

The pStyle is made from simple polypropylene and polished to a shiny finish both inside and out. The glossy surface sheds liquid well, so not much will be left behind after use.

The first step in cleaning is to shake the pStyle stp device out vigorously. After peeing and drawing the pStyle forward to wipe with, it will be in your hand, as in picture one below.

Turn it 180 degrees so the wide part of the cup is facing away from you and down, as in picture two. Once in this position, you can shake the pStyle in a down-and-up motion several times to release any remaining liquid.

Washing with Water and Soap

The best hygiene practice for any urination device is to wash it with natural soap* and warm water, paying extra attention to cleaning the back edge (see diagram below), which comes in contact with your genitals. Whether or not you can do this and how well you can do it depends on your situation.

*What kind of soap?

Avoid anything scented. Most fragrance, whether chemically synthesized in a lab or squeezed out of herbs, irritates mucous membranes. Avoid soaps that have colorants in them as well. We like Dr. Bronner’s unscented the best.

Precarious or Emergency Situations

If you are hanging from a harness or in the middle of fighting a fire, doing anything more than shaking out your pStyle urination device may not be an option. In this case, wash it with natural soap and water when convenient. At the very least, do it at the end of each day.

Out and About

You will likely have a water bottle if you are hiking, at a concert, or doing a job like landscaping. Hold the pStyle with the cup facing towards you, funnel pointing down, and douse it with water. If you have natural soap*, you can rub a little of that on the back edge before rinsing.

Again, if all you can do is rinse during the day, it is best to clean with soap and water at the end of the day.

Indoor Plumbing

Washing a urination device out in the sink is easy at home or in restrooms with indoor plumbing. Be aware that most soaps in public restrooms are not something you want to wash your pStyle with. A vigorous rinsing with hot water will do just fine until you can access a fragrance and dye-free soap*.

Other Cleaning Options

Here are some alternatives for cleaning a urine device.

• Sanitary wipes that do not contain bleach or other harsh chemicals.
• Rubbing alcohol wipe or spray - Ensure alcohol evaporates entirely before using again.
• Wipe with an antimicrobial cloth like Kula Cloth.
• Use caution with dishwashers. Water temperatures over 130 F. might warp the shape. Use dishwasher soap without bleach, dye, or fragrance like Blueland's.

What Not to Do

• Do not bleach.
• Do not boil. It won’t melt, but it may become misshapen.
• Do not use harsh chemicals, fragrances, and dyes.
